Information on the Diversity of Atlanta’s Culture

Atlanta will be kicking off the New Year, with a nod to their burgeoning Asian culture, that is a strong presence there. The Chinese Dance Troupe Shun Yen, will make their first official stop of the national Tour in Atlanta, Georgia. The Dance troop says, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which falls at about the same time as the troops performance in Atlanta. The troop first performed in Atlanta in 2007, and for the past five years, the troop’s Atlanta shows have drawn a huge amount of faithful admirers, of all ages. The troop is based in New York, but travels the country with a contingent of over 20 dancers, and classically trained Chinese musicians, to bring guests a vibrant and interesting look at Chinese Culture.

The 2012, will usher in the ‘Year of the Dragon’ on the Chinese calender. The Atlanta Zoo, has a huge celebration planned to commemorate the holiday. To commemorate the 15 days of the Chinese New Year, the zoo after hours, called ‘Night Crawlers’, will feature activities that coincide with the Chinese New Year. Like Chinese arts and crafts, that participants of all ages will enjoy. Georgia State University will have a special celebration as well, to commemorate the Chinese New Year. Their Asian Cultural Studies program, will be having a Chinese Dinner, and special concert performances, with authentic Chinese Music being performed. They will also put on a fashion show, that displays, authentic Chinese clothing worn for ceremonial events and festivals in Chinese celebrations. Local artists from the Asian community will be in attendance at well to discuss and offer their artwork for sale at the event. There will also be a panel discussion of important Chinese historical events, and how these events have changed the course of history.
